Because all sales are final, getting the size right the first time matters. Sixty seconds with a tape measure is the whole job — and if you're unsure after reading this, ask us before you order.
What you need
A soft tape measure. Don't have one? Use string or a phone charging cable, mark it with your thumb, then lay it flat against a ruler. Accurate enough.
The measurements
1. Neck girth — for collars
Wrap the tape around the base of the neck, where a collar naturally sits: low, above the shoulders, not up under the jaw. Snug, then check you can slide two fingers flat underneath.
2. Chest girth — for anything that goes around the body
Around the widest part of the ribcage, just behind the front legs. Keep the tape level. Two fingers underneath again.
3. Back length — for mats and beds
From the base of the neck (between the shoulder blades) to the base of the tail, standing square. Add a few inches for a mat so your dog can stretch out rather than curl up.
Getting an accurate number
- Measure standing, not sitting. Sitting changes chest shape enough to push you a size out.
- Measure the coat your dog wears in the season you'll use the gear. A winter double coat can add an inch or more.
- Take each measurement twice. If they differ, use the larger.
- Write it down. You'll want it next time.
Between two sizes?

Growing puppy? Size up and use the adjustment range — then check the fit weekly.
Checking the fit when it arrives
- Two fingers should slide flat under a collar. Not one, not four.
- Nothing sits in the armpit. Straps behind the front legs should sit at least two finger-widths back from the elbow, or they'll rub raw within a few miles.
- Full shoulder movement. Watch your dog walk — the front legs should extend as freely as with nothing on.
- It doesn't come off. Fastened, gently try to pull a collar back over the head. If it slides off, it's too loose.
Recheck after the first long walk. Rubbing shows up as flattened or missing fur before it becomes a sore.
